Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Earthquake Drill at Wagor Xitun Campus

The calm morning atmosphere on campus was suddenly interrupted by the sound of the earthquake alarm. Immediately, all teachers and students sprang into action following emergency procedures.

To mark National Disaster Preparedness Day, the school conducted a campus-wide earthquake drill at 9:21 a.m. on September 19. As this year’s preparedness day falls on a weekend, the drill was held in advance to ensure participation. The event was a powerful reminder of the lessons learned from the devastating “921 Earthquake” in 1999 and aimed to strengthen earthquake awareness and preparation for future seismic events.

As soon as the alarm sounded, students and teachers followed the procedure:“Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” They protected their heads and quickly sought cover nearby. Once the all-clear signal was given, homeroom teachers guided their students along pre-planned evacuation routes to two designated gathering points: the school field and the second pick-up area. The entire evacuation only took about five minutes, with everyone moving quickly, calmly, and in an orderly manner — a clear sign that their training has become second nature.

Throughout the drill, teachers provided clear instructions, and students followed them with great discipline. From maintaining proper spacing in evacuation lines to gathering quickly and efficiently at safety zones, students demonstrated impressive preparedness. The Student Affairs Department also played a key role by carefully planning separate evacuation routes across campus to avoid crowding and ensure everyone could reach safety zones quickly. Thanks to their thoughtful planning, the drill was both realistic and effective.

Principal Shen observed the drill and praised the students for their performance. He emphasized that the ability of quick and correct responding during an earthquake is critical for protecting lives, which is why every drill matters.

The exercise not only inspected the school community’s disaster response skills but also reminded everyone that safety education is just as important as academic learning. Wagor International School Xitun Campus is committed to ongoing training. We hope that earthquake preparedness becomes a natural part of every student and teacher’s daily life — ensuring a safe and secure campus for all.

IMG 5349
