Earthquake Drill: Strengthening Safety Awareness for Lasting Protection

Taiwan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiencing thousands of earthquakes each year, ranging in magnitude. While most are too mild to be felt, the 921 Earthquake on September 21, 1999, stands as one of the most impactful in Taiwan's modern history, with a magnitude of 7.3. This earthquake caused severe casualties and widespread building collapses, shaking the ground and the entire society. It heightened national awareness and underscored the importance of earthquake preparedness.

Therefore, Taiwan has designated September 21 as National Disaster Prevention Day. This year, September 21 falls on a Saturday, consequently, the school-wide earthquake drill was to be held earlier, on September 20 at 9:21 a.m.

At the Xitun campus, when the earthquake alarm sounded, all teachers and students immediately followed the "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" procedure, protecting their heads and seeking cover. After the alarm ended, teachers led the students in an orderly evacuation to the designated safety areas. The entire evacuation process took approximately five minutes, and the school's evacuation was successfully completed. This demonstrated that the Wagor students have thoroughly internalized the knowledge of earthquake preparedness and disaster prevention.

In addition, the Student Affairs Department tailored the evacuation plan to fit the school's environment, dividing the nearest assembly points into two areas: the running track and on the basketball courts in the back. This was designed to ensure that students could evacuate quickly and efficiently to the nearest safe zone.

Lastly, our Principal Shen Yueqing actively participated and observed the students during the drill. He earnestly and emphatically reminded all students to remember the life-saving steps to take during an earthquake. By reacting correctly in the first few moments, students can protect themselves from danger and safely assist others.
