Explore the Marvels of Science Ignite Curiosity and Innovation through Engaging Science Activities

Every year, we prepare a hands-on Science week activity in the "Science and Life" domain. This year’s activity was based on a proposal by Principal Shen in which a unique large-scale competition was organized for students from grades three to five to participate in creative competitions. Led by Principal Shen and the academic affairs office colleagues, the event was scheduled to take place during the last three afternoons of the semester following the completion of final exams.

First up was the third-grade "Harry Potter's Sorting Hat." Children utilized provided paper materials, while working in groups to unleash their imagination and create two wearable 3D magic hats. At the end of the competition, the vertical height of the two magic hats per class group was measured, determining the winning class. Keep those hats standing tall! Regardless of how many times the hat collapses, it must be resiliently erected. The secret to making the magic hat stand tall lies in the folds and curves of the paper!

Wow! What unique tote bag designs! It turns out to be the fourth-grade "Hogwarts Magical Tote Bag" fashion show. Watching the children confidently strut with their bags, one might mistake it for a fashion runway! Children are tasked with using on-site materials to create an environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing tote bag. The bag that could hold the most beverage bottles would win the grand prize. Brainstorming and hands-on work, tearing paper and sticking tape, everyone worked diligently to assemble sturdy tote bags. Not only must they be visually appealing, but their capacity and durability must also be considered, even the seams of the handles and the bottom of the bag are devilishly detailed.

On the last day of Science Week, the fifth graders were set to compete in the "Spinning Flying Cup" contest. Children constructed flying devices and rubber band launchers using paper and plastic cups. After carefully observing the teacher's demonstration and operation details, they strived to make their flying devices spin vigorously under Principal Shen's explanation of the "Bernoulli's Principle." The competition goal for each class was to launch their spinning flying devices, with the aim of landing them in the hula hoops on the ground. The more targets hit, the higher the score.

In this talent-, skill-, and luck-filled competition, the children worked together to achieve their goals. After each launch whistle, they anxiously watched to see if their flying devices landed successfully. Surprisingly, out of seven classes, four ended up tied. The tied classes immediately engaged in a sudden-death match. It was a tough battle to determine the top three, and Principal Shen even added a twist by having teachers compete alongside students with handheld flying devices, instantly elevating the atmosphere to its peak. The children ended this joyful, creative, and educational Nature Week activity with a sense of joy and excitement.
